The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has stated that statistics show more than 80 employees have been subjected to victimization under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration to date.
Speaking at a press conference held at the MDP headquarters on Thursday, MDP National Congress member Hussain Hassan announced that the party is launching a protest titled "Employment Thursday." He stated that the demonstration is being held to advocate for the rights of employees who are being dismissed or suspended, noting that such "cruel treatment" has escalated significantly. He further emphasized that the intimidation of workers regarding their job security has now reached an extreme level.
Furthermore, Hussain stated that according to information received so far, more than 80 employees have been subjected to unfair treatment regarding their employment. He added that the MDP's legal team is working to protect the rights of these affected employees, noting that over 60 cases have already been filed with the Employment Tribunal.
This is not a recent development. According to our records, we have received cases involving more than 80 employees who have been either dismissed or suspended from their positions. Currently, our legal team is representing individuals in 60 active cases before the Employment Tribunal involving allegations of unfair dismissal. Furthermore, our legal team reported this past Tuesday that approximately 10 additional cases of this nature have been submitted for review.
Hussain stated that the current administration has made job intimidation a common practice, noting that these concerns have been raised persistently for a significant period of time.
Consequently, he announced that the MDP leadership will participate in the protest scheduled for Thursday night and urged the general public to join as well. He further stated that the party will no longer remain silent moving forward.
