Shahid: Ghafoor Played Key Role in Strengthening MDP
MDP President Abdulla Shahid has expressed his gratitude to Hanimaadhoo MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa for his service as the party’s interim chairperson over the past six months. Shahid highlighted that Ghafoor’s leadership during a critical period for the party played a vital role in their success during the local council elections. He further expressed confidence that Ghafoor would continue to serve the party through the parliamentary group and in various other capacities in the future.

The President of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Abdulla Shahid, has commended the Member of Parliament for the Hanimaadhoo constituency, Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, for his significant contributions and strengthening of the party during his tenure as interim chairperson.
In a post on X on Wednesday, Shahid stated that Gappo has provided invaluable service to the MDP during his six-month tenure as the party's interim chairperson.
Expressing his gratitude for Ghafoor’s contributions, Shahid noted that he took charge of party affairs during a critical period. Shahid further highlighted that Ghafoor played a pivotal role in the success achieved by MDP candidates in the local council elections.
Furthermore, Shahid expressed his confidence that the party would continue to benefit from Ghafoor’s contributions through the work of the parliamentary group and other various avenues.
Following the resignation of former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail from his position as Chairperson of the MDP, Ilham Ahmed proposed Ghafoor’s name for the role of Interim Chairperson during the party’s National Council meeting held last night, December 8, 2025. Ghafoor was elected to the post with 65 votes from the 66 members in attendance at the meeting.
Ghafoor is the longest-serving member of the MDP parliamentary group. He is also a veteran lawmaker with an extensive tenure of service in the Parliament.
