Addu City Mayor Ali Nizar has stated that the reclamation of the "Moolekede Fishimathi" area in Hithadhoo is an unacceptable act and suggested that legal action should be pursued regarding the matter.
Nizar made these remarks while expressing concern over the current management and handling of the Fishimathi area.
He described the government's decision to reclaim the area as a highly irresponsible act. In response, a group of young people has launched a campaign titled "Save Fishimathi" to oppose the project.
Nizar stated that the government's decision would lead to the complete loss of vegetation in the area. He emphasized that the destruction of this site, which is located in close proximity to the protected Addu Nature Park, is unacceptable.
"This will lead to the complete destruction of the mangroves. This is an unacceptable act that should never have been allowed to happen. Those responsible must be prosecuted," he said.
Environmental organizations have expressed concerns that such government decisions could lead to the loss of funding for biosphere-related projects. Meanwhile, members of the public continue to voice their opposition to these measures.
