The third phase of the project to modernize the roads of Thinadhoo City has come to a standstill under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration.
Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Vaudhunaama" program, former Member of Parliament for the Thinadhoo South constituency, Abdulla Saneef, expressed deep concern over the stagnation of development projects in the city under the current administration.
Saneef stated that from the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen through to the term of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Thinadhoo has achieved development in line with the aspirations of its residents. He further noted that President Muizzu has also made numerous pledges aimed at the city's continued development.
Referring to the project to upgrade the roads of Thinadhoo to modern standards, Saneef noted that the third phase of development commenced under the current administration. However, he stated that the project has since come to a standstill, with not a single road completed to date.
The third phase of the Thinadhoo road development project was recently launched. Given Thinadhoo’s size, road construction has been an ongoing priority across various administrations over the years. During President Yameen’s tenure, the initial asphalt paving began, covering a significant number of roads. This was followed by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration, which carried out a second phase of similar scale, further expanding the paved road network. With the commencement of this third phase, I had expected the remaining stretches of the island’s roads to be completed. I also anticipated that the plans to develop roads in the previously reclaimed areas would finally be realized. However, to be perfectly honest, it appears that these efforts are ultimately vanishing into thin air.Abdulla Saneef, the former Member of Parliament for the Thinadhoo South constituency.
The Road Development Corporation (RDC) was awarded the third phase of the project to upgrade the roads of Thinadhoo City to modern standards on February 25, 2024.
The Ministry of Construction stated that the project will involve the redevelopment of 50 roads in the city, spanning 19 kilometers. The scope of work includes the installation of drainage systems, road markings, and signage, as well as the construction of pavements.
The Ministry stated that the entire project is expected to take approximately three years to complete, with an estimated total cost of 341 million Rufiyaa.
