President Muizzu was engaged in a personal competition to see how many foundation stones he could lay across different islands: Shahid
MDP President Abdulla Shahid has criticized the current administration as being proficient only at laying foundation stones, claiming that no development projects are actually progressing. Speaking at a rally in Thinadhoo City, Shahid stated that housing projects have come to a standstill and the government has failed to lay even a single brick toward national development. He further characterized President Muizzu’s trips to various islands as nothing more than a "foundation-laying competition" rather than substantive progress.

MDP President Abdulla Shahid has stated that throughout 2025, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu appeared to be engaged in a personal competition to see how many foundation stones he could lay across different islands.
Speaking at a rally held in Thinadhoo City on Saturday, Shahid remarked that the current administration has proven to be unparalleled in the country's history when it comes to the sheer frequency of laying foundation stones.
Shahid noted that following President Muizzu’s official nationwide tours as Head of State late last year, the PNC issued several statements praising him. He remarked that these efforts were aimed at creating the impression that no other leader in Maldivian history had ever undertaken such extensive travels across the country.
When those discussions began, I also took the time to consult historical records. It is indeed true. No Maldivian head of state has ever undertaken a journey of that magnitude before. It was as if he were competing in a foundation-laying contest. He visited every single island in the country to lay foundation stones. With every stop, he seemed determined to surpass the number of foundation stones he had laid at the previous island.MDP President Abdulla Shahid
Shahid stated that during those travels, the President's sole focus was visiting every island in the Maldives to lay foundation stones. He further noted that one of the most prominent aspects of this effort was the President's drive to ensure that the number of foundation stones laid at each subsequent island exceeded those at the previous one.
Shahid stated that the entire country can bear witness to the fact that the 50 housing units he initiated in Thinadhoo City last week remain at a complete standstill. He further characterized the current administration's housing projects as being "snagged on a reef," likening their lack of progress to a fishing hook stuck firmly on a rock.
Shahid stated that while this administration has failed to lay even a single stone toward the country's development, not a single housing project has been initiated, even as the year they promoted as the "year of housing" comes to a close.
