Former President Mohamed Nasheed has announced that efforts to remove President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu from office have commenced, stating that the process will be carried out through the People's Majlis.
Speaking at a campaign rally on Monday night in Male' for former Addu City Mayor Sodiq, who is contesting the North Hithadhoo constituency, President Nasheed stated that they would secure a two-thirds majority in Parliament to pursue a no-confidence motion against President Muizzu.
President Nasheed noted that the leader of the PNF and former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom also stands ready to support this endeavor. Furthermore, Nasheed expressed confidence in securing the two-thirds majority signatures required to submit a no-confidence motion against President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to the People’s Majlis, despite the PNC currently holding a supermajority.
This administration must be changed before the end of this year. Do not be concerned. God willing, we will secure a decisive supermajority in the People’s Majlis—the two-thirds majority required to pass a motion of no confidence. President Yameen also stands fully prepared to see this through. Furthermore, it is clear to me that a significant number of Members of Parliament currently aligned with the PNC will cross the floor. They will switch parties and sign the no-confidence motion against this President.Former President Mohamed Nasheed
President Nasheed stated that the reason for electing Sodiq to the position remains clear to the people of Addu, Male', and the entire Maldives. He noted that the objective is to hold President Muizzu’s administration accountable.

President Nasheed stated that the results of the referendum held on April 4 demonstrate that President Muizzu’s administration has already failed. Nasheed further asserted that this signifies the President has lost the public's confidence.
The North Hithadhoo constituency seat became vacant following a Supreme Court ruling on April 12, which declared that the incumbent member, Mohamed Sinan, had lost his seat. The ruling was issued after Sinan and several others failed to repay a 3.8 million Rufiyaa loan taken from the Maldives Islamic Bank.
The by-election for the constituency is scheduled for the 6th of next month. The candidates contesting the seat are Sodiq and the current councilor for the Hithadhoo Moolekede constituency, Ahmed Saeed.
