Following the inaugural meeting of a committee formed by three former presidents, the group has expressed confidence that the opposition can effectively work towards correcting the country's current trajectory.
The first meeting of the committee representing former President Mohamed Nasheed, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, and former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom was held on Monday afternoon. All six members of the committee attended the meeting, which took place at Manhattan Business Hotel.
The committee comprises former Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Eva Abdulla, former MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, former Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Ahmed Saleem, former Alifushi MP Mohamed Rasheed Hussain, former Minister Mohamed Maleeh Jamal, and Ismail Zariyand.

Briefing the media following the meeting, Faiyaz, representing the committee, stated that discussions were held regarding how political parties should proceed with the issues at hand. Faiyaz further noted that they would establish a mechanism to coordinate these activities and ensure that information is disclosed on a daily basis as they move forward.
Fayyaz further stated that the committee holds high expectations for this initiative. He also expressed confidence that the opposition can work together effectively to rectify the current trajectory of the Maldives.
The decision by the three former presidents to collaborate comes at a time of escalating public discontent with the administration of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, fueled by growing concerns over the government's current trajectory.
In a joint statement, the three former presidents asserted that President Muizzu’s administration has blatantly infringed upon the fundamental rights guaranteed to citizens by the Constitution and is actively exerting undue influence over the judiciary. They further highlighted that the government has undermined the authority of the People’s Majlis and compromised the independence of state institutions.
Furthermore, it was noted that press freedom is being obstructed and journalists are being imprisoned. The statement also highlighted the deteriorating living conditions of the public, a weakening economy, and a significant surge in the cost of goods. Despite these circumstances, the statement noted that government wasteful spending remains excessively high.
