Shahid calls for immediate release and medical care for imprisoned journalists
Concerns are mounting over reports that detained journalist Leevan is being held in isolation and denied access to essential medical care by the relevant authorities. As Leevan’s health continues to deteriorate, Shahid has called for immediate measures to ensure his safety and security, urging the government to provide urgent medical treatment without further delay.

Abdulla Shahid, President of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has reiterated calls for the immediate release of journalists currently detained at Maafushi Prison.
In a post on the social media platform X on Sunday, Shahid reiterated his call for the immediate release of journalists currently detained in the Maldives. He made this appeal while expressing grave concern over the conditions and well-being of the imprisoned journalists.
Shahid highlighted deeply concerning reports indicating that detained journalist Liwan is being held in solitary confinement and denied access to necessary medical treatment. The MDP President further noted that the situation is deteriorating on a daily basis.
Shahid further stated that the relevant state authorities must take full responsibility for Leevan's safety and security. He also emphasized that the authorities must ensure he receives necessary emergency medical treatment without any delay.
Relevant government authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the matter. Meanwhile, press freedom advocates continue to call for an investigation into the condition of the imprisoned journalists and are demanding that their fundamental rights be guaranteed.
