The President of the R. Rasmadhoo Island Council, Mohamed Asif, has stated that there is no available land for the allocation of residential plots and expressed concern over the lack of progress regarding the island's housing unit project.
Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Fashaairu" program, Asif stated that the island’s land area is fully utilized and there is no remaining space available for the allocation of housing plots.
He stated that the most effective way to utilize the island's existing land is to develop flats, ensuring that the available space benefits the greatest number of people.
Asif further stated that during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's visit to the island on January 22, 2025, the President pledged to initiate a housing project in the near future. However, he noted that no practical work on the project has commenced to date.
Asif stated that the island is facing a severe housing and land shortage, emphasizing the need for an urgent solution to the issue.
The allocation of land plots is no longer a viable option. Under the current land-use plan, only about 16 plots remain available, as the island’s land area is almost entirely exhausted. Consequently, the Council does not intend to proceed with further land allocations. Instead, our focus is on maximizing land utility by developing flats to accommodate a larger number of residents. In line with this strategy, a project to construct 50 housing units is underway. During the President’s visit to the island on February 22, 2025, he assured that this project would proceed. We have already designated the necessary land for this purpose, and I have been informed that the project has been officially awarded to a contractor.Mohamed Asif, President of the Rasmaadhoo Island Council
While Asif noted that no progress has been made on the Rasmaadhoo housing project, President Muizzu visited the island on January 22, 2025, and stated that the highest priority in the 2025 budget would be to address and resolve such issues within the framework of new projects.
Consequently, he provided assurances that the Rasmaadhoo housing unit project would be prioritized within the government's ongoing housing initiatives.
