Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Dr. Abdulla Muththalib has stated that there is no viable way to resolve the housing crisis in the Greater Male' Region without the implementation of the Ras Male' project.
Responding to questions from members in Parliament on Tuesday, the Minister stated that the project is being implemented with a long-term vision spanning the next 20 years. Emphasizing that this initiative is independent of other ongoing projects, the Minister noted that the Ras Male' project is the definitive solution to the housing crisis in the Greater Malé Region.
The Minister stated that he could not comprehend how 5,000 land plots could be allocated from the 169 hectares available in Giravaru. He further noted the lack of available land for constructing the housing units required for the residents of the Greater Male' Area. The Minister highlighted that even if all available land in the region were utilized, it would only accommodate approximately 12,000 flats, which he emphasized is an insufficient number to meet current demands.
"The Ras Male' project is a necessity. Without it, there are no further avenues to secure housing," Muththalib stated.
Minister Muththalib stated that since the areas currently being reclaimed have already been allocated as housing plots, the housing crisis can only be resolved by seeking alternative solutions and planning strategically for the future.
