Public interest in the land plots being issued from Ras Male' has declined, leading authorities to allow individuals to apply even if their spouse already owns a housing unit
The government has revised the allocation policy for Ras Male' land plots and launched a new housing program titled "Goathi-Gedhoru," which now allows individuals to apply for 1,000 available plots even if their spouse already owns a property. According to the Ministry of Housing, Land, and Urban Development, this policy shift aims to maximize housing accessibility and address the lower demand for land plots compared to flats by easing eligibility restrictions for applicants.

Following a low turnout for land plots in Ras Male', eligibility criteria have been eased to allow individuals to apply even if their spouse already owns a housing unit.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Dr. Abdulla Muththalib, the Housing Minister in President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration, stated that an analysis of the applications submitted so far reveals that the demand for land plots is lower compared to the demand for flats. Consequently, the Minister announced the decision to launch a "Gothi-Gedhoru" program to provide further opportunities for those seeking land plots.
Under current family housing regulations, individuals are deemed ineligible if their spouse already owns a property. Having considered this, and noting that the demand for land plots is relatively lower than the demand for flats, we have decided to relax our policies. We are launching a new program titled "Goathi Gedhoru" (Land and Housing). Under this new initiative, individuals will be eligible to apply for land plots even if their spouse owns a property. This change is specifically designed to ensure that those whose spouses already own a flat will have the opportunity to secure land in the future.Dr. Abdulla Muththalib, the Minister of Housing in President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's administration.
The Minister stated that under this policy, even if one spouse already owns a flat or housing unit, the other partner will retain the right to acquire their own land in the future.
Under this policy, individuals will be eligible for land plots only if they agree to relinquish any land or portion of land they are entitled to receive through inheritance or a will from properties registered in the names of their parents, children, or spouse.
Despite the low demand for land plots in Ras Male', the government has decided to allocate land from the area under this policy. Accordingly, the government has moved to issue 1,000 land plots from Ras Male' under this category.
