Proposal submitted to hold MDP Chairperson election after the presidential primary
MDP’s interim chairperson, Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, has proposed delaying the election for a permanent chairperson until after the presidential primary, citing concerns that holding the vote now could destabilize internal party unity and hinder efforts to hold the government accountable. Ghafoor further noted that the party currently lacks the necessary funds to conduct the election and urged senior leadership to deliberate on administrative matters before submitting a formal proposal to the National Congress.

A proposal has been submitted to postpone the upcoming Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) chairperson election until after the party's presidential primary.
The proposal was submitted by the MDP’s acting chairperson and Member of Parliament for the Hanimaadhoo constituency, Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, in a message sent to the party’s National Congress WhatsApp group.
Ghafoor stated his preference for holding the chairperson and constituency elections after the presidential primary. He explained that conducting these elections at this time could jeopardize internal party unity, which would subsequently hinder efforts to hold the government accountable.
Furthermore, he stated that the party has not received any of the government funds due to it this year, leaving them without the necessary finances for operations or to conduct the election.
Ghafoor has therefore requested that the party's senior leadership deliberate on its management in his absence and subsequently submit their recommendations to the National Congress.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed and South Galolhu MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem are contesting for the position of Chairperson. Alhan Fahmy, who had previously announced his intention to run for the post, has now withdrawn from the race.
According to the current schedule, the election is set to take place on Friday, June 12, 2026, with voting hours from 2:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
