Suspect arrested and remanded for 15 days following attack on Mayor Azim
The Criminal Court has ordered the 15-day remand of Abdulla Muaz, a resident of G. Eree, following his arrest for an alleged assault on Male' City Mayor Adam Azim, citing him as a potential threat to public safety. Police records indicate that Muaz has a prior history of violence, including a 2012 arrest related to a stabbing incident inside a residential flat.

The Criminal Court has ordered a suspect to be remanded in custody for 15 days following an alleged assault on Male' City Mayor Adam Azim.
Abdullah Muaz, 35, of G. Eeree, has been arrested for the assault on the Mayor during an MDP protest held on Friday night.
Muaz was produced before the Criminal Court on Monday on allegations of assault. According to the court order, police stated that during an MDP protest, Muaz attempted to physically assault and initiate a confrontation with Azim.
However, Muaz testified in court that he had approached the Mayor solely to engage in conversation, claiming that it was the protesters who had assaulted him. According to the court order, Muaz has a prior criminal record of arrests and detentions. Police records indicate that he was previously arrested in 2012 in connection with a stabbing incident inside a flat.
The Criminal Court has ruled that the release of Muaz could pose a threat to public safety. Consequently, the court has ordered him to be remanded in custody for a period of 15 days.
Male' City Mayor Adam Azim was assaulted during an MDP protest held on the main streets of the capital on Friday night. The incident occurred while protesters were marching, when an individual standing on the side of the road lunged at Azim and shoved him in the chest. Protesters accompanying the Mayor immediately intervened to protect him and pushed the assailant away.
Although police were active at the scene of the incident, it is noted that the individual who attacked Azim was not taken into custody at that time.
In an interview with Raajje TV during the protest following the attack, Mayor Azim alleged that the incident was a deliberate and orchestrated act by the government. However, he asserted that the MDP would not be intimidated by such tactics and vowed to continue their efforts to hold the government accountable.
MDP Chairperson Abdul Ghafoor Moosa has also strongly condemned the attack, affirming that the party will remain steadfast in holding the government accountable. In the wake of the incident, political activists have criticized the administration and called for measures to ensure the safety and security of protesters.
