Transparency Maldives has highlighted a concerning rise in workplace corruption where individuals in positions of power exploit vulnerable employees by coercing them into sexual acts. The organization classifies these actions as a severe form of corruption where sexual favors are demanded in lieu of financial gain. Consequently, the NGO has called for collective action to speak out against such misconduct to ensure the safety and protection of all workers.


Rise in sexual abuse cases.
On International Workers' Day, observed on May 1, Transparency Maldives has called on the public to stand up and speak out against sexual corruption.
In observance of International Workers' Day on May 1st, Transparency Maldives has shared a series of posts calling for collective action against sexual corruption.
Transparency Maldives stated that these acts of corruption involve sexual favors in exchange for services or financial benefits, rather than monetary transactions. The organization further noted that this is a growing trend, where individuals in positions of power engage in or solicit sexual acts as a form of corruption.
The agency highlighted that in such acts of corruption, sexual favors are exchanged as a form of currency instead of money.
Transparency Maldives has stated that acts of sexual corruption can occur in any environment if an individual lacking integrity holds a position of power, noting that such incidents are not confined to any specific workplace setting.
The agency further noted that perpetrators of such acts typically solicit sexual favors from employees who are either directly dependent on them or in vulnerable positions.
On the occasion of International Workers' Day, Transparency Maldives highlighted the importance of speaking out against such issues. The organization further called for measures to ensure the safety and security of all individuals within the workplace.
