Transparency Maldives Calls for Immediate End to Use of Criminal Laws Against Journalists
Transparency Maldives has stated that the police raid on the 'Adhadhu' news office and the seizure of journalists' electronic devices following the 'Aisha' documentary constitutes a threat to source confidentiality and an obstruction of press freedom. The organization called for an immediate end to the use of criminal procedures over civil media regulations and demanded the swift return of the confiscated items. Furthermore, Transparency Maldives expressed deep concern over the recent trend of actions that infringe upon the fundamental rights to freedom of expression and assembly.

Transparency Maldives has called on the government to immediately cease the use of criminal laws against journalists and to withdraw all charges currently filed against media professionals.
In a statement released Wednesday regarding the police search of the Adhadhu newsroom over the documentary "Aisha," Transparency Maldives asserted that employing criminal procedures to address matters that can be resolved through civil media regulations poses a significant threat to press freedom.
Transparency Maldives stated that Article 28 of the Constitution explicitly stipulates that no person shall be compelled to disclose the source of any information they provide. However, the organization noted in its statement that the seizure of electronic devices used by Adhadhu journalists significantly increases the risk of their sources being exposed.
The statement noted that while the civil procedures established for media regulation are intended to protect press freedom and ensure accountability, it is deeply concerning that the relevant authorities are abandoning these established principles.
Furthermore, Transparency Maldives has called for the immediate return of all seized journalistic equipment and materials, while urging a review of the legal validity of the procedures followed during the office search.
The organization noted that there have been recent occurrences hindering the freedom of the press, freedom of expression, and the right to peaceful assembly, all of which are guaranteed under the Constitution.
