Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef has delivered remarks regarding the disclosure of information that stand in stark contrast to the previous statements made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
During a press conference held on Thursday, a journalist expressed hope that the spokesperson would share information transparently without withholding anything, in line with the President's policy. Interrupting the journalist mid-sentence, Shareef stated that there are circumstances within a state where information must be kept confidential, and that this reality must be accepted. He further noted that disclosing everything is not always in the best interest of the nation.
"There will be situations where confidentiality is necessary. Please understand that this is a state. Seriously. If we were to share every piece of state information, it would essentially be an invitation for another country to intervene in the Maldives. There is such a thing as national security. I am setting these boundaries in advance. Because this is a state, there will be information that I am legally prohibited from disclosing," he said.
During his presidential campaign, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu pledged that his administration would maintain full transparency across all government offices, leaving nothing hidden from the public. He further assured that he would not allow a situation where journalists are left in the dark or struggle to access information.
Furthermore, the President stated at the time that a nation cannot achieve stability if its affairs are conducted in secrecy, hidden from the public.
