Police must not remain silent as current administration continues to trample on the rights of the people: Mausoom
Mausoom emphasized that the police must fulfill their duty to protect the Constitution and the rights of the people. Speaking at an MDP rally, he accused the current administration of obstructing press freedom and freedom of expression, asserting that media outlets should not be penalized for the information they report. He further stated that the police service, funded by public tax money, is obligated to ensure the protection of citizens' fundamental rights.

Former Tourism Minister Abdulla Mausoom has stated that the police service must not remain idle while President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration continues to infringe upon the rights of the citizens.
Mausoom made these remarks while speaking at a protest organized by the MDP on Tuesday night. During the demonstration, which is part of a series of ongoing protests held by the MDP in Male', Mausoom leveled heavy criticism against the current administration.
Mausoom stated that since the salaries, allowances, and all other expenses of the police are funded by the Maldivian people, the force must prioritize the interests of the citizenry.
In this regard, he emphasized the necessity of defending the Constitution and the rights of the people. He further stated that the police must not remain silent while the rights of citizens are being undermined.
Furthermore, Mausoom stated that the fundamental pillars of democracy are a free press and the freedom of expression. He alleged that the current administration is now obstructing these essential rights. Mausoom further noted that while this government initially positioned itself as being media-friendly, the situation has now completely shifted.
A new administration has taken office. They recently held a media symposium at the Social Centre, complete with colorful seating, vibrant backdrops, and an elaborate microphone setup. There was a great deal of fanfare and grand posturing from everyone involved. Even then, I wondered how this would ultimately end. What we witnessed last night were further challenges to our journalism. Among the rights granted to the people, the one we seek to uphold most fervently is the freedom of expression.Former Tourism Minister Abdulla Mausoom
Mausoom stated that journalists will report on the state of the nation and that news outlets should not be held at fault for doing so.
He stated that while the Constitution guarantees citizens the opportunity to lead a dignified life, the police must also fulfill their legal obligations and ensure that the constitutional rights of the people are upheld.
