Parliament is now a tool being used by President Muizzu to lead the state toward ruin: Nazim
Nazim asserted that the constitutional amendments introduced by the current administration through Parliament are designed solely to facilitate President Muizzu’s transition toward absolute authoritarian rule. He specifically highlighted legislative changes that obstruct press freedom and amendments to the Decentralization Act that strip local councils of their powers. Nazim further warned that while the government is attempting to suppress the public and steer the nation toward autocracy, the Maldivian people will not allow such a power grab to succeed.

Former Member of Parliament for the Madaveli constituency, Mohamed Nazim, has stated that the People’s Majlis has become a tool used by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to lead the state toward ruin.
Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Fala Surukhee" program, Nazim stated that all the constitutional amendments being introduced by the current administration through the People’s Majlis are intended to grant President Muizzu absolute and autocratic control over the government.
In this regard, he highlighted legislative amendments that obstruct press freedom and changes to the Decentralization Act that restrict the powers of local councils.
Highlighting that members were bribed to gain control of Parliament, Nazim stated that these actions were carried out openly, effectively placing the entire institution under the grip of corruption. He further noted that, as a result, it is the citizens who are now suffering the consequences.
Nazim stated that the People's Majlis has now become a tool used by President Muizzu to lead the state toward ruin.
Under the Constitution, the People's Majlis is an institution vested with significant powers. This Constitution was never designed with the intent that a reckless leader could come to power and completely paralyze the legislature. On the contrary, the Majlis is the legal institution mandated to hold the President accountable. Therefore, when this institution is constrained, the state begins to function in a regressive and distorted manner. This is exactly what we are witnessing now. It is a deeply concerning and regrettable situation.Mohamed Nazim, the former Member of Parliament for the Madaveli constituency.
Nazim stated that despite attempts to steer the administration toward an authoritarian rule by suppressing the Maldivian people, the public will not allow such an opportunity. He noted that this sentiment was made very clear following the results of the recent referendum.
Furthermore, Nazim noted that the MDP government had also secured a supermajority in Parliament during its tenure.
However, he maintained that no improper amendments were made to the Constitution, asserting instead that the changes have granted additional powers to the citizens. In this regard, Nazim highlighted the specific amendments brought to the Decentralization Act.
