Dr. Ahmed Shamheed, the Member of Parliament for the South Hulhumale' constituency, has stated that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration must cease wasteful projects and redundant hiring. He noted that it has now become clear to the government that the public no longer accepts such practices.
Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Fala Surukhee" program, MP Shamheed stated that the government must acknowledge its past mistakes and take proactive steps to rectify them.
Highlighting that millions of rufiyaa in corruption are being siphoned through the administration daily, MP Shamheed stated that before dismissing employees following the three elections held on April 4, the procurement departments of institutions and ministries must be reformed. He emphasized that these systems must be restructured to prevent opportunities for corruption. Furthermore, he asserted that the government must cease undertaking wasteful projects and hiring for redundant positions. He noted, however, that there are currently numerous individuals under this administration who remain at home receiving salaries without having any actual work to perform.
Ras Male' is not the only wasteful project. I have observed similar waste with the proposed Vihafaru airport project in Noonu Atoll. When we visited Velidhoo, we could see two excavators stationed on a small patch of reclaimed land from the harbor. It must have cost at least 200,000 Rufiyaa just to transport those excavators from Malé. They were simply left there after reclaiming a tiny area. A few MTCC staff were stationed in Velidhoo, and the excavators themselves were likely rented. They just sat there on that small reclaimed patch in the lagoon. Every day, when the tide washed some of the sand away, the staff would take a dinghy out, have the excavators move a bit more sand to patch it up, and then leave them idle again. Just the other day, I saw on social media that those two excavators have now been brought back to Male'.MP Shamheed
MP Shamheed stated that the current administration's spending on superficial projects alone would reach billions. He emphasized that by eliminating such wasteful expenditure, the government could fulfill numerous public needs. Furthermore, MP Shamheed noted that achieving development in line with the people's aspirations is well within reach if these issues are addressed.
