Meekail launches campaign: Vows to stand firm with general members
Meekail Ahmed Naseem, contesting for the position of MDP Chairperson, aims to unify the party and secure victory in the 2028 presidential election. Rather than endorsing a specific candidate, he has pledged to guarantee a fair primary that earns the trust of all members. Highlighting the confidence placed in him by the general membership, Meekail stated that he remains steadfast in his commitment to protecting the party's best interests.

Member of Parliament for South Galolhu, Meekail Ahmed Naseem, has officially launched his campaign, titled "Ithubaaru", for the chairmanship of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Speaking at a campaign rally held at M. Finifaru, Meekail stated that he had announced his candidacy for the permanent Chairperson of the MDP six months ago, backed by the support of numerous general members. He assured his supporters and those involved in his campaign that he remains steadfast in his commitment to this endeavor. Meekail explained that his decision to contest for the MDP Chairperson position was rooted primarily in his belief that he possesses the trust of the party's general membership. He further emphasized that regardless of the election's outcome, the members can remain confident that he will continue to stand with them and remain dedicated to the party.
Secondly, I believe the foremost duty of an MDP Chairperson is to secure victory for this party in the upcoming 2028 presidential election. In my view, the MDP has historically succeeded in elections only when all its members have worked together in unity. Success comes from strengthening the party and acting in the collective interest. However, as some of my opponents have already endorsed specific presidential candidates, I am being asked whether I am aligned with any particular individual. The assurance I wish to give to you, the general members of the MDP, is that as Chairperson, I stand ready to conduct a fair, equitable, and credible primary that earns the trust of all potential contenders. Meeakail stated that his primary goal is to secure a victory for the MDP in the 2028 presidential election. He further noted that, if elected as Chairperson, he is committed to unifying the party and working closely with the general membership to advance its political agenda.
Meekail has been an active member of the MDP since the age of 16, serving continuously in various positions within the party. Having already completed one term in the People’s Majlis, he is currently serving his second term as a Member of Parliament.
In addition to Meekail, former President Mohamed Nasheed is also contesting for the position of MDP Chairperson. Former Member of Parliament Alhan Fahmy has also decided to run for the post.
