The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has decided to appoint Judge Abdulla Jameel Moosa as the Chief Judge of the High Court of the Maldives. Judge Jameel currently serves as the acting head of the court.
The position of Chief Judge of the High Court became vacant following the appointment of the former incumbent, Judge Hussain Shaheed, to the Supreme Court. The post fell vacant once again after Judge Mohamed Faisal, who was previously selected by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) for the role, resigned from the bench before his official appointment letter could be presented.
Three judges applied for the position of Chief Judge following the vacancy announced by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC). The applicants were Judge Abdulla Jameel Moosa, Judge Mohamed Shaneez Abdulla, and Judge Abdul Rauf Ibrahim. According to an official from the JSC, the commission decided to appoint Jameel to the post after conducting interviews with all three candidates.
Abdulla Jameel Moosa, who has been appointed as the Chief Judge of the High Court, brings over 15 years of extensive experience in the judiciary. He was initially appointed to the High Court bench on August 3, 2023. His appointment followed vacancies created at the High Court after two of its judges were elevated to the Supreme Court.
Reflecting on Jameel’s judicial career, he served as a Magistrate at the L. Dhanbidhoo Magistrate Court from September 23, 2003, to January 31, 2009. Subsequently, he held the position of Judge at the Civil Court from February 1, 2009, until February 21, 2019.
