The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has requested a court injunction to suspend preparations for a public referendum on holding presidential and parliamentary elections concurrently. This follows a legal challenge filed by the party seeking to annul the decree issued by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to conduct the vote.
The MDP has requested an interim order, citing four specific points in their submission.
The MDP has stated that it has been denied the opportunity to campaign as stipulated under Section 26(b) of Law No. 15/2025 (The Referendum Act). Furthermore, the party noted that while the objectives of political parties are defined in Section 3 of Law No. 4/2013 (The Political Parties Act), they are currently unable to effectively carry out their responsibilities as mandated under Section 3(a)(2) of the same Act, which requires parties to facilitate the free formation of public opinion and thought.
Furthermore, the MDP stated that the plaintiff would suffer significant political damage and face irreparable financial losses due to campaign expenditures related to the vote should the court later determine the resolution to be invalid.
The MDP has requested that the court issue an injunction in the absence of the respondent, the Attorney General's Office. The party has also urged the court to grant the injunction as a matter of urgency.
