The Local Government Authority (LGA) announced on Thursday that the swearing-in ceremony for newly elected local councilors is scheduled to take place on May 17.
An official from the Local Government Authority (LGA) stated that, pursuant to the Decentralization Act, the term of office for local councilors is five years. As the tenure of current councilors is set to expire on May 17, the swearing-in ceremony for newly elected councilors has been scheduled for Sunday, May 17.
Providing details regarding the event's agenda, an official stated that the ceremony will feature two primary proceedings. The official noted that the program will commence with the swearing-in of the newly elected councilors, followed by the signing of the official declarations by members of the Women's Development Committees.
Regarding the timing of the swearing-in ceremonies, the Local Government Authority (LGA) stated that specific schedules will be finalized following consultations with the judiciary and respective councils. The oath of office will be administered to the councilors by the judges presiding over their respective islands or jurisdictions.
A total of 681 councilors and 681 members for Women's Development Committees were elected in the Local Council and Women's Development Committee elections held last Saturday. This marks the first election conducted since the term for councilors was extended to five years under the Maldives' decentralization framework.
