New Fines Proposed for Littering in Oceans and Along Beaches
The Ministry of Environment has initiated the drafting of new regulations to fine individuals who litter in the ocean and on beaches. Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim stated that this measure is a crucial step toward raising public awareness about environmental conservation and protecting the natural resources vital to the Maldivian economy. Consequently, stricter legal actions will be implemented in the future to curb activities that cause environmental degradation.

Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim has announced that regulations will be established to penalize and fine individuals who dispose of waste into the sea and onto the beaches of islands.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, the Minister stated that reports of individuals disposing of waste into the sea and onto beaches surface periodically, emphasizing that such actions require strict monitoring and enforcement.
The Minister stated that efforts must be undertaken to address these issues, emphasizing that necessary measures must be implemented to find a resolution.
The Minister noted that despite the existence of a waste management law, a specific regulation must be established to penalize those who commit such offenses. He further stated that the government will formulate and implement this regulation.

The Minister stated that the formulation of such regulations is not intended to penalize any specific group. Instead, he emphasized that these measures are aimed at increasing public awareness.
Emphasizing the necessity of protecting the Maldives' environment and managing its natural resources sustainably, the Minister stated that these efforts are directly linked to the nation's economy. Consequently, the Minister warned that environmental degradation would lead to adverse impacts on the country's economic stability.
