Maldives is not currently in a position that necessitates a referendum; this move is merely being orchestrated to pave the way for President Muizzu to consolidate all powers under his control: Bigey
Hussain stated that this vote is an attempt to consolidate all authority within the presidency and restrict the constitutional powers granted to the people under the separation of powers. He urged citizens to remain vigilant and reject the referendum, warning that the move would effectively strip away the ability to hold the government accountable.

The Maldives is currently not in a position to conduct a referendum; however, such a vote is being pursued merely to facilitate President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s efforts to consolidate all powers, according to Mohamed Rasheed Hussain, the former Member of Parliament for the Alifushi constituency.
Speaking at a press conference held by the MDP on Sunday, Hussain stated that current conditions are not conducive to holding a referendum and that the country is not prepared for such a vote.
Referring to the Maldives' transition to a system of separated powers, Hussain stated that this change was the culmination of long-term efforts by many. He emphasized that the public desires to hold the government accountable and ensures that power remains in the hands of the people.
However, he stated that after many years, this administration is once again attempting to curtail the powers of the people.
I say this because, after generations of absolute rule where all authority was vested in a single leader, we finally transitioned to a system based on the separation of powers. However, we are now witnessing a reversal where the People’s Majlis—the very institution intended to hold the government accountable—is being absorbed and locked into the grip of the executive branch. This indicates that the powers once liberated by the citizens are merging back into a single entity. The country’s affairs are being restructured and organized in a manner that undermines the protection of the people's fundamental rights.Mohamed Rasheed Hussain, the former Member of Parliament for the Alifushi constituency.
Hussain stated that the current system does not grant President Muizzu the full extent of power he seeks. Consequently, he argued that the President is attempting to seize these powers by holding a referendum. He further emphasized that the public must remain vigilant on this matter and urged citizens to reject the proposed referendum.
