The Maldives Police Service has reported a rise in cases involving the misuse of personal information, photos, and videos for extortion and harassment.
The police have noted an increasing trend in the misuse of private photos and videos across various social media platforms. These cases involve extorting money by threatening to leak personal information, as well as the unauthorized distribution and sale of such content. Additionally, authorities highlighted a rise in the use of Artificial Intelligence to create deepfake images and videos intended to defame and tarnish the reputation of individuals.
Police noted that investigations reveal many such cases involve the misuse of sensitive information shared in confidence during intimate relationships. Once these relationships end, such material is often exploited to defame, intimidate, or extort victims for financial or personal gain.
Furthermore, police stated that these acts are considered serious offenses, causing significant psychological and social harm to victims while also damaging their reputations. Police emphasized that the impact of such actions is particularly severe in Maldivian society, where great importance is placed on family ties and personal dignity.
To safeguard against falling victim to such crimes, the police have urged the public to refrain from creating, storing, or sharing private photos and videos via digital platforms. They emphasized the importance of remembering that once information or imagery is shared, it leaves one's control and can be copied, saved, or disseminated by others. Furthermore, the authorities advised against participating in or encouraging the distribution of such material, noting that these actions may also constitute a criminal offense. The police also called on individuals to report any instances of blackmail or threats involving personal information or imagery without delay.
The police stated that they are currently investigating and taking legal action against individuals who exploit personal information and imagery for illicit gain. The authorities further urged the public to uphold social standards and ethics, advising everyone to refrain from any actions that could infringe upon the dignity of victims or lead to their further victimization.
