Police launch special investigation into dangerous fire at chemical warehouse
A soldier was injured and significant damage was caused to the building and nearby vehicles following a major fire at the Prime Fertilizer warehouse in Maafannu. Authorities provided temporary shelter to 77 residents due to the risk of chemical smoke inhalation, while police have launched a specialized investigation to determine the cause of the blaze.

Police have launched a specialized investigation into a dangerous fire that broke out at a warehouse containing various types of fertilizers and chemicals.
Police reported on Thursday that they received a report of a fire at a warehouse belonging to "Prime Fertilizer Maldives Private Limited" at approximately 21:57 on the night of March 18, 2026. The warehouse is located at the junction of Izzudheen Magu and Fulooniyaa Magu in the Maafannu district of Male'.
Upon receiving the report of the incident, teams from the Police and the MNDF Fire and Rescue Service arrived at the scene to combat the blaze. They managed to bring the fire under control by approximately 10:49 p.m., and it was completely extinguished by 4:58 a.m. on Thursday.
Police stated that the warehouse where the fire broke out contained various types of fertilizers, pesticides, and agricultural equipment, as well as a generator.
Police further stated that an MNDF firefighter sustained injuries while battling the blaze and was treated at the hospital. The fire caused extensive damage to the warehouse and its contents. Additionally, police confirmed that 13 motorcycles, a pickup truck, and a company van parked in the vicinity sustained varying degrees of damage.
Police stated that as a precautionary measure against potential smoke inhalation from the chemicals stored in the warehouse, 77 residents from the area have been provided with temporary housing through the assistance of relevant authorities.
Police are currently processing the scene. Authorities have confirmed that a special investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the incident.
