President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that a study is underway to explore the possibility of reserving a specific percentage of seats in the People’s Majlis for youth under the age of 30.
Speaking at a press conference held on Monday, the President announced that constitutional amendments will be proposed to address the issue of the ever-increasing number of parliamentary seats. The President further noted that he is considering incorporating additional reforms into these amendments, adding that relevant research is currently underway to facilitate these changes.
Two specific proposals are currently under review. The first is to mandate that a specific percentage of parliamentary seats be reserved for youth under the age of 30, as there is currently no such requirement. Similarly, the second proposal involves allocating a specific percentage of seats for women, a provision that is also currently absent from the legislative framework.President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu
The President stated that another of his key objectives is to reserve a specific number of seats in the People’s Majlis for youth under the age of 30. Furthermore, he announced that he would introduce the necessary legislative amendments to ensure a designated percentage of parliamentary seats are allocated specifically for women.
The President stated that this is a significant step toward increasing the representation of women and youth at the highest levels of national decision-making. He further emphasized that empowering women and young people and expanding their roles in such matters has always been a key priority of his administration.
During the meeting, the President stated that as the Maldives' population continues to grow, the number of parliamentary seats is likely to exceed 100. He noted that the public does not believe this is a sustainable approach, pointing out that under the current system, a new seat is added for every 5,000 people.
He stated that the constitutional amendment is being introduced specifically to address and resolve this issue.
