N. Landhoo overwhelmingly prepared to say "no" to holding two elections simultaneously
Opposition groups have accused the government of orchestrating these changes to extend the presidential term, as a public referendum on consolidating the two elections is scheduled to be held alongside the upcoming local council elections.

A successful demonstration has been held in N. Landhoo to protest the proposal of holding two elections simultaneously.
During the event, participants voiced their opposition to holding presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day, highlighting the potential negative impacts on the public and raising awareness about the issue. The activity was attended by former MDP Chairperson and former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail, along with several other senior officials from the MDP leadership.
The referendum to decide on synchronizing two major elections is scheduled to be held alongside the Local Council and Women's Development Committee elections on April 4th. The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has characterized the move to combine these elections as a calculated maneuver by the government. Furthermore, some critics have alleged that this initiative is a strategic attempt to extend President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's term in office.
