Parliament remains paralyzed despite impact of war; summon the ministers: Meekail

Member of Parliament Meekail Naseem has formally requested to summon the Minister of Defence for questioning regarding the potential impact of the Middle East conflict on the Maldives and the security of the nation's airspace. Expressing concern over the failure to hold parliamentary sittings in accordance with established regulations, the MP emphasized the necessity of bringing ministers before the chamber to ensure government accountability.

As the adverse effects of war continue to impact the general public in the Maldives, Member of Parliament for South Galolhu, Meekail Ahmed Naseem, has expressed concern that the People’s Majlis—the institution responsible for holding the government accountable—has been effectively paralyzed. He has requested that the relevant minister be summoned to Parliament to provide full disclosure on the matter.

In a social media post tagging Speaker of the Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla, Meekail stated that while the adverse effects of war are impacting the general public, the People’s Majlis—which is mandated to hold the government accountable—has been brought to a standstill. He further noted that the PNC remains entirely preoccupied with campaigning, failing to convene even the sessions required under parliamentary regulations.

Meekail has also requested that the ministers be summoned for questioning.

Along with the post, the Member of Parliament shared the formal questions submitted to summon Minister of Defence Ghassan Maumoon to the Majlis. Specifically, the Member questioned the Minister regarding the extent to which the risks of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East have been assessed in relation to the Maldives, and what measures are being taken to prepare for such eventualities.

Furthermore, the inquiry includes questioning the Minister on whether the Maldives National Defence Force was aware of the strike launched against Diego Garcia through Maldivian airspace. It also seeks clarification on whether any measures have been taken to secure the country's airspace and protect Maldivian citizens from the potential dangers posed by such incidents.

Concerns are mounting over the repeated cancellation of parliamentary sittings without prior notice to members, even on days mandated by the parliamentary rules of procedure. Opposition members continue to express their grievances over the lack of transparency regarding the legislative schedule.
