The Elections Commission is prioritizing the decree issued by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu over the Elections Commission Act, stated Abdulla Waheed, the MDP spokesperson for the Council Elections.
Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Noonekey" campaign program, Waheed stated that the MDP has shared its concerns regarding the constitutional referendum with the Elections Commission. Waheed questioned the specific responsibilities of the Elections Commission under the Elections Commission Act and other electoral laws. He further asserted that the Commission is prioritizing the President's decree over its statutory obligations as defined by the Elections Commission Act.

They stated that the President's letter merely requested to consult the public or to seek a simple "yes" or "no" response. Where, then, is their accountability?Abdulla Waheed, Spokesperson for the MDP Council Election
Furthermore, highlighting the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, he noted that instead of striving to meet the needs of the people during such a critical period, the entire government's focus remains solely on winning upcoming elections.
Waheed stated that the current organization of the election raises concerns that many citizens may lose their right to vote. He further noted that there is evident government influence over independent institutions.
