Legal expert Aik Ahmed Easa has stated that the government’s deceptive motives behind the proposed referendum are becoming increasingly apparent. He further asserted that consolidating the two elections would, in reality, only serve to reduce costs for President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
He made these remarks while speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Noonekey" campaign program.
Aik stated that what is being witnessed today is the introduction of significant systemic changes under the guise of the 8th Amendment to the Constitution, leaving the public in the dark. He further warned that the government would implement even more drastic changes in the future.
According to Ike, the government's justification for implementing these changes is the claim that they will reduce expenditures and ensure political stability.
However, noting that merging the two elections would only reduce costs for President Muizzu, Aik stated that it would allow two votes to be purchased with a single stack of cash.
Aik further stated that they could no longer remain indifferent to these matters, adding that this was the primary reason they were compelled to file the case in court.
This reveals a complete lack of sincerity and exposes the government's hidden, deceptive agendas.Attorney-at-Law Aik Ahmed Easa
Two cases regarding the referendum vote have been submitted to the Supreme Court, one of which was filed by lawyer Aik. This specific case challenges the phrasing of the referendum question.
Aik stated that the referendum question asks whether the 8th Amendment to the Constitution should be ratified, despite the amendment containing numerous details unrelated to matters that legally require a public vote. He further noted that the question should instead directly ask the citizens whether they agree to shorten the parliamentary term.
Aik further stated that the PNC currently holds a supermajority in Parliament, which is being utilized to consolidate control over all branches of the state. He criticized this approach, pointing to the manner in which the state budget was passed as a primary example.
Aik stated that the primary objective of working to hold both elections on the same day is to establish a framework that ensures these processes remain sustainable and consistent in the future.
