Supreme Court's handling of referendum case will be a true test of its independence: Yauqoob

Former Dhaandhoo MP Yauqoob Abdulla has stated that administrations other than those led by the MDP have consistently been observed to completely dismantle the Supreme Court.
Speaking on RaajjeTV's "Noonekey" campaign program, Yauqoob stated that public confidence in the Supreme Court is eroding and noted that the court's previous operational standards are currently shifting.
He noted that the public gained significant clarity on the situation, particularly through the sequence of events that unfolded after the matter was submitted to the Supreme Court.
Consequently, Yauqoob questioned whether the case currently before the Supreme Court regarding the referendum would be able to proceed.

Yauqoob stated that it is essential for Maldivian citizens to fulfill their civic duty by filing necessary cases with the Supreme Court. He further noted that the true extent of the court's independence will only be revealed through its handling of these matters.
Yauqoob further stated that judicial reform has always been a cornerstone of the MDP's policy agenda when assuming power. He noted that, in contrast, administrations other than the MDP have consistently been observed to completely undermine the Supreme Court.
