Legal expert Ali Hussain has stated that the presidential and parliamentary elections pertain to the upcoming term of governance, and that it would be far more prudent for President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to prioritize reducing the expenditures of his current administration before considering those matters.
Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Noonekey" campaign program, Ali Hussain stated that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is seeking a referendum because he believes it is the only viable path to securing an additional term in office.
The real reason they are attempting to synchronize the two elections is that the President likely realizes he cannot succeed without making all current Members of Parliament his running mates and working collectively. We see no other justification for this move.Attorney-at-Law Ali Hussain
Ali Hussain stated that while it is claimed that a referendum is held to ensure public stability and reduce costs, this is far from the truth. He further noted that there is no reason for President Muizzu to focus on cutting costs for a future election cycle without first addressing and reducing the expenditures of the current administration.
The parliamentary elections are scheduled to take place after November 17, 2028. Therefore, one must ask why the President is so preoccupied with this matter, as it falls outside the mandate for which he was elected. Deciding whether or not to reduce the costs of an election held during that period is not a responsibility within this President's current mandate.Attorney-at-Law Ali Hussain
Furthermore, he stated that if the government genuinely intended to reduce expenditures, there are numerous other measures that could be taken. He further characterized the current administration as one marked by excessive spending and significant waste.
Ali Hussain further stated that this referendum is being conducted with the intention of introducing numerous changes aimed at extending the President's tenure in office.
