To overcome the current economic crisis facing the Maldives, we must reject the proposal to combine the two elections: Nishan
Legal expert Mohamed Nishan Ibrahim has urged the public to vote "no" in the upcoming referendum against the government's proposed changes to the electoral system, warning that consolidating elections would diminish public oversight and pave the way for authoritarianism. Nishan emphasized that citizens must actively oppose these policies to safeguard the nation's economic and social stability.

Prominent lawyer Mohamed Nishan Ibrahim has stated that the Maldivian people must seek a new path to escape the current economic and social hardships facing the country. He asserted that this path involves moving away from President Muizzu's administration and urged citizens to vote "no" in the upcoming referendum to achieve this.
Nishan made these remarks while appearing on RaajjeTV’s "Noonekey" campaign program on Wednesday night. Speaking during the program, Nishan stated that President Muizzu is currently at the helm as the Maldives faces these challenging times. He further emphasized that the only way to rescue the nation from this crisis is to be liberated from President Muizzu’s leadership.
Nishan described the referendum scheduled for April 4th as an election closely tied to deciding whether President Muizzu should remain in power in the future. He stated that the public must explicitly say "no" to the government's efforts to consolidate the two elections, in order to prevent a lasting stain on the Maldives' governance system.
President Muizzu is at the helm, steering the course of the current economic hardship facing this country. Therefore, the Maldivian people must realize that this election is deeply tied to the question of whether President Muizzu should remain in power. Citizens must reflect on this situation and choose a path to escape this crisis by distancing themselves from President Muizzu’s leadership. To achieve this, the people must say "no" in this election. If we say "yes," the negative consequences will haunt our children and grandchildren for generations to come. This is becoming an indelible black stain on the Maldivian governance system. To protect future generations from this legacy and to break free from President Muizzu’s grip, the Maldivian people must decisively reject him in this election. Everyone must come out in unison and say "no."Legal Counsel Mohamed Nishan Ibrahim
Opposition groups allege that the government’s attempt to introduce such changes to the elections is a move to diminish public oversight of the administration. Furthermore, the opposition claims that the true objective behind these amendments is to consolidate political influence and establish a long-term authoritarian regime in the Maldives.
As the political landscape in the Maldives heats up over this issue, the main opposition party, MDP, has been spearheading a vigorous nationwide campaign against the vote. In his remarks, Nishan repeatedly called on the public to stand against the government in this vote to ensure that power remains in the hands of the people.
