The Elections Commission (EC) has stated that the fire at the Prime godown warehouse will not cause any disruptions to the upcoming Local Council Elections.
While the warehouse where the fire broke out has been completely destroyed, the Elections Commission's election center is located directly adjacent to the affected building.
Speaking from the scene on Wednesday night, the President of the Elections Commission, Mohamed Zahid, stated that despite the temporary suspension of work due to the fire, all necessary arrangements have been finalized.
Zahid confirmed that all essential election documents were safely evacuated from the building. He emphasized that no documentation sustained damage and assured that all electoral processes will proceed without any disruption.
Furthermore, Zahid stated that operations will continue at the Social Center until the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) grants permission to enter the election center.
The local council elections and the Women's Development Committee elections are scheduled to take place on April 4, 2026. On the same day, a referendum will also be held to decide on the synchronization of parliamentary and presidential elections.
