The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has launched an investigation into issues concerning the occupational safety, health, and overall well-being of employees involved in waste collection and management at the Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO).
The commission officially announced the matter in a statement released on Wednesday. According to the commission, the investigation was initiated on its own motion under the Human Rights Commission Act.
Furthermore, it was noted that this investigation is being conducted under the mandate granted to the Commission by the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives and the Human Rights Commission Act to protect and promote human rights.
The Commission has opened the opportunity for the public to share information regarding this matter. This invitation extends to current and former employees of Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO), labor unions, employee representatives, relevant stakeholders, and any members of the general public who may possess information pertinent to the investigation.
According to the Commission, individuals wishing to provide information regarding this matter can do so via email, telephone, or by visiting the Commission's office in person.
The deadline for the submission of information is 12:00 PM on Thursday, March 26, 2026.
The Commission further stated that individuals wishing to provide information for the investigation who prefer to remain anonymous will have the opportunity to submit their statements confidentially. The Commission also assured that the identity of all informants will be strictly protected.
Furthermore, the Commission has warned that it will take all necessary legal action against any individual or entity that seeks to retaliate against those who provide information to this investigation.
