Maldivian people do not want a government that exploits disasters to consolidate power: MDP
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has expressed grave concern over the government's attempts to centralize power and withhold information amidst rising fuel prices and mounting economic challenges. The opposition party noted that the recent hike in fuel costs, which contradicts President Muizzu’s prior assurances, coupled with the administration's formal request for Indian assistance, underscores the severity of the current crisis. Consequently, the MDP has called on the government to prioritize transparent policies rather than exploiting national crises for political gain.

The main opposition party, MDP, has stated that the Maldivian people desire a government that provides solutions to the disasters they face, rather than one that exploits such crises to consolidate power.
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) issued a press statement on Tuesday expressing concern over the government's failure to provide accurate information regarding the potential impact on the Maldives should the ongoing conflict in the Middle East escalate further.
The party stated that the conflict is expected to have significant adverse effects on the global oil market and tourism, as well as the Maldivian economy.
In a statement, the MDP expressed concern that instead of preparing for the economic challenges posed by rising fuel prices, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is prioritizing a rushed constitutional amendment to centralize power. The party described this as a deeply concerning move given the current state of the nation.
Furthermore, the MDP noted that despite President Muizzu’s efforts to reassure the public last week by stating there was no cause for concern regarding fuel supplies, fuel prices were hiked by 20 percent less than 48 hours after his remarks. The party further stated that the government’s subsequent official request for fuel assistance from the Indian government contradicts the President’s earlier assurances and underscores the gravity of the current situation.
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has expressed its gratitude to the Indian government and its people for the assistance provided to the Maldives during this period. The MDP stated that while other countries in the region are formulating policies to overcome the fuel crisis, it is unacceptable for the Maldivian government to keep matters secret and fail to consult with relevant stakeholders.
The party has repeatedly expressed concern over the potential impact on the national economy resulting from the lack of transparency in President Muizzu’s government policies.
