Instead of disclosing the truth regarding the war, this administration is focused on political maneuvering: Solih
Former President Solih has expressed concern over the government's alleged failure to disclose the true extent of the Middle East conflict's negative impact on the Maldivian economy. He highlighted that rising global oil prices have increased national fuel expenditure, driven up the value of the dollar, and caused significant setbacks to the tourism sector. Consequently, he urged the government to transparently inform the public of the actual economic situation rather than seeking political gain during such a critical period.

Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that instead of informing the public about the potential adverse impacts on the Maldivian economy resulting from the conflict following attacks by Israel and the United States on Iran, the current administration is solely focused on political activities.
President Solih made these remarks while speaking at a special Taraweeh event held on Monday night to inaugurate the campaign office of Aminath Irasha (Ferro), the MDP candidate contesting for the North Galolhu constituency of the Male' City Council.
Speaking at the meeting, Solih expressed deep concern over the government's failure to disclose accurate information regarding the war to the public. He noted that as global oil prices continue to rise, the Maldives will face significant direct consequences. In this regard, the President highlighted that due to the fluctuations in fuel prices, the government's monthly expenditure on oil has already surged to approximately $20 million.
Furthermore, Solih stated that rising fuel prices would drive up the value of the dollar in the local market, further restricting the public's access to foreign currency. He noted that instead of raising public awareness about the looming threats posed by the war, the government is prioritizing its own political gain.
What will be the impact of this on the public's pockets? On one hand, we see state revenue being squandered on buying votes, while on the other, the cost of living continues to soar. This administration remains silent on the hardships and difficulties citizens will face due to the recent adjustments in fuel prices. Fuel prices have now surged by approximately 50 percent. Prior to the outbreak of war, the government spent between $28 million and $30 million monthly on fuel and gas imports. With the current price hikes, an additional $15 million to $20 million is being added to that expenditure. The government must bear these costs; however, the foreign currency that should be available to the general public is now being diverted to secure fuel and gas supplies. In such a critical period, instead of disclosing the truth, the government is focused solely on its political agenda.Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih
Highlighting that the ongoing war is already exerting significant negative pressure on the Maldivian economy, Solih noted that consumers who previously sought to purchase a 10kg gas cylinder are now only able to obtain 5kg. He further emphasized that rising fuel costs have prevented fishermen from heading out to sea, while the tourism sector is facing millions of dollars in losses as business owners grapple with a wave of booking cancellations.
Public accusations are mounting against the government for allegedly manipulating the realities of Middle Eastern conflicts to achieve political objectives rather than providing transparent information to the citizens. Opposition figures have intensified their criticism, particularly targeting President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s remarks regarding fuel prices, which they have characterized as inconsistent and contradictory.
