The President of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Abdulla Shahid, has called on President Muizzu to disclose the true state of the nation to the public, describing the country's current situation as deeply concerning.
Speaking to candidates and MDP supporters in Th. Kinbidhoo during the party's ongoing nationwide campaign tour, Shahid stated that the country is currently deprived of all essential services, noting that even basic necessities such as medicine and fuel are unavailable. Shahid further highlighted that while the Maldives remains in this dire situation, the government has failed to take any corrective action. He also pointed out that the administration is refusing to even disclose the reality of the country's current state.
Furthermore, Shahid noted that neighboring countries are implementing numerous austerity measures to manage the current situation. He highlighted that Malaysia has canceled its Eid festivities, while Sri Lanka has designated every Wednesday as a holiday for schools and government offices. Shahid emphasized that these nations have taken such steps with a focus on cost-cutting and long-term sustainability. However, Shahid expressed concern that, in contrast, the Maldives has failed to implement any such measures.
The President stated that he has established a committee tasked with engaging directly with major tourism industry stakeholders, investors, and guesthouse operators. He emphasized the importance of listening to their current concerns and firsthand experiences. He further noted that government officials should not operate under the assumption that they possess superior knowledge in isolation; rather, they must actively consult with those in the field.Abdulla Shahid

He further noted that concealing information would ultimately result in detrimental consequences for the entire country.
Shahid stated that under the current circumstances, the government must provide the public with accurate information and take all necessary measures. He further urged the government to cease the distribution of numerous jobs for political gain during such a critical period.
