A hearing in the murder case of Mary Grace, who was employed at IGMH, was held at the Criminal Court on Wednesday.
The purpose of this hearing was to record testimony from a defense witness. The witness presented was an individual who was employed in the administrative office of IGMH Hospital at the time of the incident.
During the hearing, the defense questioned the whereabouts of the handwritten clinical notes detailing the initial treatment provided to Mary Grace upon her arrival at the Emergency Room. This inquiry follows testimony from an attending physician who previously informed the court that such notes were indeed recorded at the time.
The witness stated that they were unaware of any specific protocols or procedures governing the retention and disposal of such handwritten notes.
Furthermore, although the prosecution requested Mary Grace’s medical charts, the court clarified that Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) had stated no such charts were ever prepared.
The witness testified that medical charts are not compiled for individuals who are brought in deceased; instead, a death summary is prepared for such cases. He further stated that the details of the medical treatment administered to Mary Grace would be clearly outlined in the death summary.
He also spoke regarding the software used in the patient record management system at IGMH.
The defense counsel stated that the details contained in the death summary can only be verified by the defense once the relevant medical notes are obtained.
Consequently, the defense stated that they were unable to obtain the necessary clarifications from this witness. The defense further requested the court to summon a medical expert capable of providing technical information regarding the medical notes.
The presiding judge stated that medical experts had previously appeared before the court in this case, providing the defense with ample opportunity to seek any necessary clarifications at that time. Consequently, the judge ruled that no further witnesses would be summoned.
The next stage of the proceedings will be the presentation of closing statements. The hearing is scheduled for March 26.
Judge Muzammil Nasir is currently presiding over this case at the Criminal Court.
