The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has launched an investigation into allegations of police brutality involving a foreign national who was arrested on drug-related charges.
Police stated that the commission has formally notified the Maldives Police Service regarding the matter. Furthermore, the police have provided assurances that they will extend their full cooperation to the commission's ongoing investigation.
The police stated that they have proactively looked into these allegations. Furthermore, authorities noted that their review of the matter revealed that the individual had not raised any complaints regarding mistreatment or injuries during the arrest process or throughout the period of detention.
The police service stated that during the standard procedures for verifying information regarding his detention, he did not report any incidents of mistreatment, nor did he request any medical attention.
The individual alleging police brutality has been identified as Hanif, a 36-year-old Bangladeshi national. He was arrested late last month during a police operation involving the search of two vessels, which resulted in the seizure of over three kilograms of narcotics.
He is accused of drug use and trafficking.
The Criminal Court on Monday extended his detention by an additional 30 days. According to the court order, the suspect has alleged that he was subjected to police brutality and has filed a formal complaint with the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).
