An elderly man has been arrested in Male' City following an incident where he allegedly intentionally rammed a pickup truck into a moving motorcycle.
Zareer Hassan, a 60-year-old native of Gaafu Alif Villingili, was arrested last Wednesday on suspicion of causing a motor vehicle accident through dangerous driving. On March 5, 2024, the Criminal Court ordered him to be remanded in custody for five days.
According to the court order, a certain amount of evidence has been presented to support the allegations. This includes the incident report filed by the officers who attended the scene, as well as a photo report containing snapshots from CCTV footage of the area where the incident occurred.
Furthermore, the investigating officer testified in court that the pickup truck driven by Zareer Hassan suddenly veered into the motorcycle lane and intentionally struck the victim's motorcycle, resulting in injuries to the victim.
While the police are investigating such matters as serious offenses, the law explicitly states that operating a vehicle in a manner that endangers lives or property is a criminal act. Furthermore, Section 62 of the Land Transport Act stipulates that any person operating a motor vehicle must prioritize road safety and ensure their driving does not pose a threat to others.
