Defending the efforts to synchronize presidential and parliamentary elections, Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel has likened the move to the simultaneous holding of local council and Women's Development Committee (WDC) elections.
Many are raising objections to holding the presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day, arguing that the interval between the two polls allows citizens a crucial opportunity to evaluate the performance of the incumbent administration.
Speaking at a PNC campaign event, Khaleel clarified that the local council elections and the Women's Development Committee elections are two separate processes, noting that voters are issued two distinct ballot papers.
Khaleel stated that this further proves that holding two elections on the same day has never caused any issues in this country to date.
To be clear, these are two distinct elections. You will be handed two separate ballot papers. Therefore, it should now be evident to everyone that holding two elections on the same day has never caused any issues in this country to date.Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Abdulla Khaleel
Noting that the People's National Congress (PNC) holds the parliamentary majority, Khalil further stated that while the Constitution could be amended without a public referendum, the government decided to hold a vote to seek the people's opinion as a testament to its integrity and sincerity.
