Former Member of Parliament for Kelaa constituency, Ibrahim Shareef, has stated that the public will lose all their power if they vote in favor of the proposed referendum.
He made these remarks while speaking at the MDP's "pickup" rally held on Sunday afternoon.
Shareef noted that this administration has displayed a pattern of authoritarianism since its inception. He asserted that citizens must reject the government in the upcoming vote scheduled for April 4. Furthermore, he stated that the resolution to hold the current referendum was passed only after opposition members were treated with utter contempt. Shareef highlighted that the vote was pushed through after members were forcibly dragged out of the parliamentary chambers. He further contended that from the beginning, this administration has pursued a policy of consolidating power and centralizing authority within the executive branch.
"What we are seeing are the hallmarks of a dictatorship. The objective is to curtail the power of the people. This is by no means being done for the sake of convenience. It is because they find it difficult to face the public. That is why they are merging the two elections—to avoid going back to the people," Shareef said.
