Former MDP Chairperson Mariya Ahmed Didi has stated that it would be more effective to have President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu or a direct PNC representative in Parliament, rather than members who serve in name only.
Speaking at a press conference titled "No to Referendum" held on Sunday, Mariya stated that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had visited and engaged with residents across all islands of the Maldives prior to the council elections. She noted that during none of these meetings did the public express any concern regarding the two elections being held separately.

Mariya stated that while the PNC holds numerous seats in Parliament, it would be more effective to have President Muizzu or a direct PNC representative present in the chamber, rather than having members who serve as mere figureheads.
Furthermore, Mariya stated that President Muizzu has never been one to prioritize fiscal restraint. She noted that if there were a genuine desire to reduce expenditures, there are numerous measures that could be implemented immediately.
Mariya further noted that holding the two elections separately provides citizens with an opportunity to evaluate the performance of the incumbent administration at that time.
Furthermore, Mariya stated that President Muizzu is currently observed to be working towards the subjugation of the people. In contrast, she noted that the MDP had focused its efforts on empowering citizens and enabling them to become self-sufficient.
