Detention extended for Sri Lankan national arrested in connection with Amin Mia's death
Heshan Maduranga Dissanayake Menika, 32, was arrested under a court order on February 1, 2026, and following the expiration of his initial detention, his remand was extended for an additional 45 days on February 18, 2026. Accused of involuntary manslaughter, the court ordered his continued detention based on evidence of criminal negligence and concerns that he poses a significant flight risk.

The detention of the Sri Lankan national arrested in connection with the death of Amin Miya has been extended.
Heshan Maduranga Dissanayaka Menika, 32, was arrested under a court order on February 1, 2026, in connection with this case. Upon being produced before the Criminal Court that same day, he was remanded in a custodial prison for a period of seven days. Following the expiration of the initial remand period, the court ordered on February 18, 2026, that he be further detained for an additional 45 days.
He has been charged with manslaughter.
The court cited the existence of sufficient evidence to support the allegations as the basis for the decision to remand the individual in custody.
According to the submitted statements and CCTV footage, it is believed that a person died after being struck by the excavator he was operating. Police informed the court that he had operated the excavator without exercising the necessary degree of caution.
Furthermore, the court order noted that according to a witness statement, the suspect had expressed a desire to return to his home country following the incident. The court further stated that as a Sri Lankan national, there is a significant risk he may abscond if allowed to leave the country.
Police have reported that the death of Amin Mia, a Bangladeshi national who was working at the WAMCO site in Thilafushi, occurred on the afternoon of January 26, 2026. The incident took place while an excavator was clearing waste at the landfill; he was reportedly struck by the excavator’s bucket and fell, subsequently becoming buried under a pile of refuse as the machinery moved waste from one area to another.
