Suspended driver strikes elderly pedestrian in Eydhafushi, victim dies after ICU battle

An elderly man who sustained serious injuries in a road accident involving a pickup truck in Eydhafushi island of Baa atoll, has died.
The accident occurred on the night of January 15 and resulted in severe injuries to the victim. He passed away on Friday morning while receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
The deceased has been identified as Aboobakuru Abdulla, 82, of Seasonge, B. Eydhafushi.
The incident took place on the evening of January 15, when Aboobakuru was walking home after performing the Maghrib prayer. He was struck by a pickup truck driven by Abdulla Rameez of Dhuni, Eydhafushi. It has been reported that the driver’s license had previously been suspended due to traffic violations.
According to a local witness, the impact caused Aboobakuru to fall and become trapped beneath the vehicle. Bystanders at the scene were able to rescue him by manually pushing the pickup truck back.
The witness further stated that at the time of the rescue, Aboobakuru had sustained a deep laceration to one of his legs, resulting in significant blood loss at the scene. After receiving initial treatment at Baa Atoll Hospital, his condition was assessed as critical, and he was medically evacuated to the capital, Malé City the following day for emergency treatment at IGMH.
It is understood that the driver of the pickup truck is currently in police custody as investigations into the incident continue.
