With the elections approaching, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced a decision to grant 100,000 Rufiyaa as an allowance to the residents of Sinamale' and Male' Hiya flats. The announcement was made during a meeting with the residents, held in the presence of PNC candidates.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu met with the residents of the Sinamale' and Male' Hiya flats in the Galolhu district on Monday afternoon at the President’s Official Residence, Mulee’aage. During the meeting, he decided to introduce a special relief package to address the residents' concerns and provide solutions to their grievances.
The meeting was attended by Moosa Ali Jaleel, the candidate endorsed by President Muizzu for the Male' City mayoral race, alongside Mohamed Areesh, the Deputy Mayor of Male' City, who is also contesting the upcoming election as a candidate from the President’s party.
According to a statement released by the President's Office, residents of the Sinamalé and Maléhiya flats met with the President to voice their concerns regarding the deteriorating condition of the buildings, as well as issues surrounding outstanding rent and accumulated fines.
To address these concerns, the President's Office stated that the President has decided to provide financial relief to the owners of Sinamale' 1, 2, 3, and 4, as well as Male' Hiya 1 and 2. According to the President's Office, this relief includes a total waiver of all outstanding fines incurred due to non-payment. Furthermore, in recognition of the deteriorating structural condition of the buildings and the long delay in finding a permanent solution, the President has decided to grant MVR 100,000 to each household as a compensatory allowance.
Under this scheme, if the total outstanding balance owed by a flat owner exceeds MVR 100,000, a deduction of up to MVR 100,000 will be applied. If the total amount owed is less than MVR 100,000, the remaining balance will be waived, and the difference will be deposited directly into the owner's account. The President's Office further stated that President Muizzu has decided that for those who have already completed their flat payments in full, the entire MVR 100,000 will be credited to the apartment owner's account.
As preparations continue for the Local Council and Women's Development Committee elections scheduled for April 4, reports have surfaced regarding the systematic use of state-owned enterprises to influence the vote. Supporters of the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) candidates are allegedly being granted jobs and promotions, while those suspected of not supporting the government's candidates face punitive measures, including forced transfers, disciplinary warnings, and, in some instances, dismissal from their posts.
