Mauroof Zakir, the Member of Parliament for the Kendhoo constituency, has stated that the frequent power outages in B. Kendhoo have become a severe issue and accused the government of failing to take action to resolve the matter.
Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Vaudhunaama" program, MP Mauroof stated that the current powerhouse in Kendhoo is located within the residential area, despite the new powerhouse and office building being completed during the MDP administration. He noted that only minor tasks remain to be finished, yet the current government has failed to relocate operations to the new facility even after more than two years in power. He further highlighted that the residents continue to face daily hardships due to the powerhouse remaining situated in the heart of the community.
Highlighting the severity of the power outages in Kendhoo, MP Mauroof stated that he had received reports of electricity being cut 32 times in a single day. He noted that these frequent disruptions have caused significant damage to numerous electronic appliances, resulting in substantial financial losses for the residents. He further remarked that the community is currently living in a constant state of uncertainty and fear, never knowing when the next power failure might occur.
MP Mauroof stated that following the electricity issues faced during the first Ramadan of President Muizzu's administration, the President had pledged to resolve power supply challenges across all islands in the Maldives before the next Ramadan. However, Mauroof noted that no significant efforts have been made to ensure reliable electricity services or to increase power generation capacity.
To this day, the electricity crisis in Kendhoo remains unresolved. Just recently, I saw a news report stating that the island experienced thirty-two power outages in a single day. As a result of these constant disruptions, numerous household electronic appliances have been damaged. This is the current reality of the situation in Kendhoo.Mauroof Zakir, Member of Parliament for the Kendhoo constituency.
In addition to Kendhoo, several other islands across the Maldives are facing significant power outage issues. Recently, the entire Addu City also experienced a total blackout.
